Lighthouse at Black Head

A view of the Gleninagh ridge in the Burren. Near the water line, the white square is the lighthouse at Back Head. Above it, to the left and just below the cliffs, is the stone fort of Cathair Dhuin Irghuis (it is easier to make out the features in the large version of the picture).
The picture was taken from near the diving board at the end of Salthill Promenade with a tlephoto lens (100-400mm Canon Zoom fitted to a Canon40D). Since it was a hot, hazy day, the image was subsequently [and quickly] adjusted to bring out the cntrast and detail in the picture.
Apologies for the dust spots – I didn’t have a chance to fully edit the image before posting.

thank you for the gorgeous photo, this was one of my favorite areas on my visit in 2007. I have some nice shots but this is just magnificent. Hope to get back over there again.
Next time I’m in Salthill I’m going to look for the lighthouse and fort. Can you drive or hike up to the fort? The Burren has got to be my favorite spot in Ireland!
To get to the fort, you need to be on the other side of Galway Bay – in Co. Clare. The lighthouse is on the road to Fanore, and there is a narrow spot where one can pull in on the side of the road. The fort is a short hike up the hill from there.
Thank you for the directions!! I’ve driven by it multiple times and never knew it was there! When I visit Ireland I stay in Peterswell just outside of Gort and we always make at least one trip to the Cliffs of Moher stopping along the way to photograph the beauty that is The Burren. I’m excited I have a new place to stop!
