The shoreline along Galway Bay is festooned with the corpses of these little fishies. Large shoals of them are swimming close to the shore in the hope of evading bigger fish as well as diving birds. But if they get too close to the water’s edge, then they end up as food for the many scavengers on dry land. This little fish, just a couple of centimetres long, was photographed at the Coral Beach in Carraroe in west Galway – you can see the lumps of coral in the background.
