This simple wooden cross marks the resting place of a young fisherman from Inis Meain – the middle island of the Aran Islands – who died 119 years ago, at the age of 18 . The grave lies in the grounds of an old, forgotten monastery near Kinvarra. Iascaire is the Irish word for a fisherman, so the text either means the fisherman was named Peigín (which would suggest a young woman) or someone belonging to Peigín [can anyone with better Irish let me know?].
The picture is taken in infrared.
