Rainy night in Eyre Square

Last year, the traders at the Christmas Market in Eyre Square had to contend with freezing temperatures – this year, gale force winds and driving rain meant that only the very hardy (and maybe some of the foolhardy) were wandering around the stalls. Here’s hoping that the weather improves over the coming weeks – the market will be in Galway until December 18th.

So much for the summer. I drove out to Leitir Mor yesterday to watch the boat races (which continue today, and are well worth a look). Alas, despite the odd glimpse of sunshine, there was mor than our fair share of rain too. More is predicted today. The lad above used the upturned currachs as shelter from the rain – the boats were used later for the rowing races.

I planted poppy seeds a few months ago. Poppies are tough flowers but a few days of artillery-like rain just as they began to bloom has proved just a little too much. This is one of the survivors.

As I write this, the rain is hammering off the window. Not good for July (though not surprising either). Members of the Galway Walking Club are planning a night walk this weekend and it looks like we are in for a drenching. [We won't actually be walking in the dark - we'll climb the hill at sunset, pitch tents and then climb down again at sunrise]. Still – mustn’t complain. Living in Galway and getting drenched go hand-in-hand. The picture above sums up the determination of schools to put on a great show on St Patrick’s Day, whatever the weather. In 2007, it poured and yet all of the kids marched and played and danced for the entire route [even if the cold and wet conditions meant they couldn't always muster a smile]. Kudos too to all the teachers for the hours of practice beforehand and the watchful eyes on the day, keeping everyone in line and on time.
