Even though it was a calm morning, the full tide meant that the waves splashing onto the shore at Spiddal, Co. Galway [on November 8th] were big enough to catch the rising sun. Picture taken about an hour after sunrise, on the beach beside the road on the eastern side of Spiddal.

There’s not many leaves left on the trees after the gales that swept across Galway Bay on Saturday. The sea was pretty rough, and heavy showers meant that the streets were more empty than one would expect for an October Bank Holiday weekend. These pictures are from another stormy weekend earlier in the year – taken near Doolin in Co. Clarein July, during the alleged ’summer’.

When the waves are very big, the churning motion of the sea generates a coffee-coloured foam on the water.
Sea water flowing over rocks as waves crash along the shoreline at Doolin, Co. Clare.

These pictures were shot with a high shutter speed, which freezes the motion of the waves.

This picture was taken at the same location as this one.

Ok – this fisherman was fishing for mackerel, not herring, but he was fishing for breakfast nonetheless. Taken on Sunday morning at the observation point beside Galway Acquarium (that’s the telescope beside him). The mackerel are practically throwing themselves onto the prom at the moment – I passed by the prom again on Sunday evening, and there were dozens of fishermen hauling them in. Grilled, fresh mackerel ? Yummy !!

I was back on the prom on Monday night and the weather had changed considerably. The video clips were taken with a Canon G9 compact camera.

There were fishermen nearby, but it was all they could do to stand upright in the wind, let alone catch anything.
