The Irish Wildlife Trust (of which I am a member) are conducting a national reptile survey. There are 2 reptiles in Ireland – the native common lizard (Zootoca vivipara) – pictured above- and the introduced slow worm (Anguis fragilis). I’ve never seen a slow worm, and only rarely seen the common lizard. I’ve spotted specimens in the Burren, in the Twelve Bens mountain range, and on Lettermore island (Leitir Móir) in Connemara, where I photographed the lizard above almost exactly 10 years ago.
