One of the few remaining drumlins in Galway Bay is the hill at Silver Strand. It is slowly disappearing due to relentless erosion from the sea. As a result, there is a ‘debris field’ of boulders at the base of the cliff face. There are two types of rocks visible – the granite stone which is native to this part of the Galway coastline, and the smooth and rounded limestone ones, carried by ancient glaciers to the coast, and then stranded there, as the drumlin dissolves into the sea.
