Mweelrea in Co. Mayo is the highest mountain in Connacht at a little over 8oo metres. It is also one of the most challenging to climb – visibility (or lack of it) tends to be an issue there more than on other hills and there are a number of ridge/ cliff walks [including the one pictured above] that have the potential to be dangerous. It is not a place to go wandering about on your own.
Tomorrow, I won’t have to – the Galway Walking Club are going to climb it and hopefully, there will be a good turn out [the full page article in the Galway City Tribune this week should attract more new members to the club too]. I didn’t manage to climb Mweelrea last year or this year so far.
The picture above was taken on my first time on Mweelrea, in August 2005 – just a couple of months after I joined the club. Cloud obscured the view while we walked the ridges but cleared as we descended later that day.
