The Quiet Man was released in the US on this day in 1952. I saw it again on TV last Xmas and it is still an enjoyable slice of blarney [which is much how it was received on its release, as this New York Times review reveals]. The fun of the movie for me, apart from the risible dialogue, is trying to recognize the locations in the movie since I’ve hiked across most of them at this stage.
Those locations still draw visitors more than half a century later, particularly the Quiet Man bridge near Oughterard in Galway, where the picture was taken during the cold snap last Xmas.
John, great shot, as always. When it makes its way to Galway or DVD, be sure to catch the new documentary by Sé Merry Doyle on the making of “The Quiet Man.” I was never too wild about the Quiet Man, but this fascinating film changed my perspective completely. I saw the documentary at the Belfast Film Festival, but I’ve heard that it will get a theatrical release next year (maybe with a restored version of “The Quiet Man”). Great insights into John Ford (and his Irishness). http://loopline.com/
Hi Helen,
Thanks for the reference – I will look out for the documentary when it is released,
