Another image from the aurora last week. Though the aurora was mainly visible to the north, there was also some activity visible to the west (i.e. the green tinge in the picture) at the base of the outline of the Milky Way. This picture was taken on a hill outside Spiddal in west Galway.
Ah, that is gorgeous! what a lovely combination. I like to close my eyes and see the Milky Way stretch by on the back of my eyelids. It is a nicer surprise to open my eyes and see them in front.
Hi John, your photos are lovely, please post some of your images at the above address. Ronan Newman
Hi John
Great pic. Im an amatuer photographer based in cork with limited experience of nighttime photography, mostly nighttime cityscapes. Any special tips for capturing the northern lights.
Im planning on making a dash northwards a few times to try my hand at it if the KP index and forecast align themselves
thanks
Dan
Hi Dan,
The best thing to do is try and find a spot outside the city that does not have another town directly to the north of you. Street lights really drown out the light from the sky, particularly if you are using long exposures. Even a town 10 miles away will generate a lot of street light which will give a very orange colour cast on the image.
You’ll need about 15 sec exposures to really capture the colours of an aurora -so you’ll need a steady tripod.
Hi,
John, the photo is beautiful. The Aurora or Milky Way is a sight i have always wanted to see but due to ill health travel is not possible. Is this visible through the naked eye from this location or was this a long exposure ? Bit of an odd question but i am hoping you can reply, i live in Knocknacara.
Thanking you, Patrick.
