Storms in Galway

The lifeguard hut on Salthill Promenade (in front of the former Waterfront Hotel) on its side and in the wrong place after the storm

The weather forecast predicts another bout of stormy weather tonight, just as the city is recovering from the last one. I’ve put together a gallery of images taken on January 3rd – click here to start. The first set of images were taken in the city centre at high tide, when the water was at its height (though I didn’t reach the harbour until an hour after high tide when the water level had dropped a little). The second set are from Salthill Promenade, taken around noon. By then, the tide was out and the council staff had already cleared much of the rock debris from the road.

A lot of flood damage has been done to the businesses (and some houses) along the Promenade, particularly the businesses that had basements (which filled with sea water sloshing across the Promenade road)- here’s hoping that they get through tonight and tomorrow ok. And kudos to the council staff, fire brigade, Gardai and other workers who had a very long day on Jan 3rd and have been working hard since on the clean up.
