Dense, cold fog covered Galway city this morning, as we left for Connemara at 8.15 this morning. Once we passed Oughterard, the fog lifted, though it didn’t feel much warmer. The view (taken from one of the ridges on Ben Gorm) shows the hills either side of the road from Maam to Leenaun (the village, at the mouth of Killary Fjord) is just out of shot on the bottom right hand side of the picture. Normally, one would expect the temperature to drop as we climbed higher, but today, it was warmer on  the hill than back in the car park. The temperature was just 1 degree C when we set off but it rose to around 4 or 5 degrees as we climbed. However, the beginning of the climb was sheltered from the coast. Once we reached the summit, and faced the Atlantic, the temperature soon dropped to close to zero again. Mercifully, there was almost no breeze today, which is unusual that close to the sea.
