Clover flowers in a wild meadow on Inis Mór, near the path to Dún Aonghusa.

There is no sweeter perfume than the scent of clover in a meadow. But it’s not just a pretty flower. As a member of the legume family (same as peas), clover helps keep nitrogen in the soil (so it acts as a natural fertilizer). When I was growing up, a neighbour kept bees. When the clover was in bloom, it was possible to get the flavour in the honey – bees love clover nectar.
