Crossed out on Carrauntoohil

People bring the strangest things to the cross that marks the summit of Carrauntoohil, the highest mountain in Ireland. The men in the picture above were posing with a bike brought by these lads a few years ago. It’s a pity, then, that somebody (or probably more than one person) decided to bring a metal cutter with them to saw down the cross last week. You’d think that there are some places in Ireland safe from vandalism, but I guess not. Mountaineering Ireland’s statement on the matter pretty much sums up my own view. Happily, the Irish Times reports that a team climbed the mountain this morning, and put the cross back up again.
