Bumblebee on a sunflower
I planted sunflowers in early summer but I needn’t have bothered. The finches, tits and other small birds that gorged themselves on the bird feeder at the end of my garden scattered so many sunflower seeds about that the majority of the sunflowers that bloomed are the ‘bird-planted’ ones.

The sunflowers are still in bloom, and the bees are busy. As you can see from the picture above, the bees form an important function in agriculture. The bees get covered in pollen as they move from flower to flower, and as they feed and travel, they fertilise other flowers as pollen gets transferred from bee to flower.

The picture was taken with a macro lens (which enables the close-up view) and, though it was a sunny day, I used a flash to brighten up the image.
