Hot stuff – fire burning in Ballyforan.
In east Galway, when there is a wedding, the neighbours of the bride light small bonfires at crossroads or outside the gates of their houses, so that the bride and groom will see them on their way to and from the church. It’s nice to see the tradition survive, particularly [as someone remarked to me], the reason they have time to tend to the fire is because they weren’t invited to the wedding in the first place [I suspect this isn’t always true].
