The first two competitors – Jan Van Berkel and Terenzo Bozzone – whizz along Newcastle Road yesterday morning at about 7.30 am, as part of the IronMan Galway competition – Galway Cathedral is visible in the background. They had just finished swimming 1.9 km in Salthill (both in less than 25 minutes) and would finish the 90km round trip to Maam Cross and back in just over 2 hours (in fact, I went back to the coffee shop beside Tesco’s visible in the picture above) just a couple of hours after I took this picture, and the same two cyclists whooshed by – I couldn’t believe how fast they were still going. These two came first and second respectively in the final results.
