A Red Admiral butterfly taking a rest by the shore of Lough Corrib on Sunday morning. Now that it is October, adult Admirals have a choice to make – make the long flight to southern Europe and north Africa for the winter or stay in Ireland. The ones that stay die, as do a fair share of the voyagers. But enough of the departed survive to make the return journey in the spring and begin the cycle of regeneration once more. This one has a damaged wing and while it could flutter well enough around the edge of the lake, it would be a much greater challenge to fly 1500 miles south.
