Back in January, one of the casualties of the storm was the lifeguard hut on Salthill Promenade. It was ripped from its foundation and was thrown further back onto the footpath amidst a pile of stones and other sea debris. Until yesterday, there was just a hole int he footpath marking where the old hut used to be. However, this morning, when I went down to the prom for an early morning coffee,there was shiny and colourful new lifeguard hut. The old one was actually an old shipping container suitably painted, whereas this one looks like a converted garden shed suitably painted.
There is quite a bit of cleaning up along the Prom happening this weekend. Apart from the new hut, painters were brightening up the diving board and changing areas at the other end of the Prom. The June bank holiday weekend is when the tourist season gets serious in Galway and who knows, it might even be warm enough for a dip in the sea. Which is where the lifeguard hut comes in…
