The Shannon Callows have flooded for winter (come to think of it, they were floodd in summer this year). The road from Clonmacnoise to the nearest crossing point on the Shannon at Banagher runs along the top of an esker – probably the same path that people have taken for millenia. The eight of the road means that one has a great view of the river running alongside below. And on this evening (a couple of weeks ago), the setting sun had transformed the river into a shining path of burnished gold, leading home.
