No – it’s not a picture of a headless bird. It’s a juvenile Blue Tit, having a snooze. There are a couple of feeders nearby and the bird is one of a couple of recently fledged young birds that regularly come to the feeders. Like all youngsters, it is still discovering the ways of the world, and isn’t as cautious as it should be. Though its perch is a couple of metres off the ground, it would be easy pickings for a passing neighbourhood cat or sparrowhawk. When I spotted it from my kitchen window, it looked like a tennis ball stuck on the wire, so I went out for a look. The little bird was completely conked out – it didn’t hear me approach so I had time to go back inside and fetch a camera. The picture above is taken in wide-angle with the camera on a macro setting – the lens is only 6 or 7 centimetres from the bird. I suspected it wasn’t in good health, but, once I took the first (and only picture), the click of the camera woke it up – it gave a loud, shocked chirp and fly off quickly. It might be a bit more wary the next time.
