The early purple orchid gets a mention in Shakespeare’s Hamlet – mind you, so do nettles. You’ll see plenty of them if you come along to the Clonbur Woods nature walk on Sunday morning (details here). This orchid thrives on calcareous land, and the limestone pavement in Clonbur Woods, on the shore of Lough Mask, is similar to the Burren, and provides ideal conditions for growth.
