Dragonflies and damselflies seem scarce this year. Last year, I was seeing lots of them from late June. This year, I’ve only started seeing them from last week (mid-July) since the days have got a lot warmer. One of my usual ‘go to’ places to see dragonflies and damselflies is a spot just a couple of kilmeters from my home – a stretch of boggy ground near the edge of Lough Corrib. I think the insect pictured above is a female Keeled Skimmer dragonfly, busily munching on a fly it had just caught. It made short work of it, eating it completely in a minute or so.
