I got the spider species wrong. I originally thought it was a Cross Orb-weaver spider (also known as a European garden spider – Araneus diadematus). It is actually a bridge spider (Larinioides sclopetarius) hanging from the railings at Knockferry Pier on the edge of Lough Corrib.
