Large Red Damselfly
Next Sunday (May 19th), members of the Galway Branch of the Irish Wildlife Trust (including myself) will lead a nature walk around Clonbur Woods, to highlight the many varieties of wildlife to be seen there (details of walk here). So every day this week, I’ll post a species that can be seen in the woods – hopefully, it will whet your appetite to join us on our walk (all the photos were taken last Saturday when I visited the woods to scout the walk – ignore the watermark date which is out of date).

The insect pictured above is a large red damselfly (Pyrrhosoma nymphula), distinguishable from the small red damselfly by its black legs (the small one has red legs)

As you can see, it’s large eye gives it a wide field of view.
