If you are standing on Ballyvaughan Pier, as I was on Saturday afternoon, the Martello tower by the Flaggy Shore is not as close as it seems in the photo above. Nor are the buildings on Salthill Promenade usually visible,which is not surprising since they are nearly 16 km away on the other side of Galway Bay. But on a clear day, with a zoom lens, it’s possible to see details on the other side of the bay. In the photo above, you just make out the tower of Salthill church and the Bailey Point building on the Prom (on the left of the Martello tower) and Galway Cathedral , on the right.
