A red deer stag eyeballs a rival stag near the shores of Lough Leane in Killarney a few weeks ago.
It’s November, which means that deer are rutting. When I was in Killarney at the end of last month, it was fascinating to watch rival stags bellowing at each other as they tried to establish dominance and territory. This one was photographed before sunrise in the grounds of the Castlerosse Hotel (where I was staying) – it’s a great place to see red deer. When it comes to impressing other deer, and growing antlers, size is everything.
