The sparrowhawk that regulary visited my garden in spring hadn’t been seen for months – I last recorded a sighting in mid-March. For the last month, I’ve hardly been able to keep the bird feeders topped up – there has been a production line of young sparrows and goldfinches eathing me out of house and hime. This evening, I was standing under the feeder pictured above, taking in the warm evening air when I sensed some movement behind me. Suddenly, a sparrowhawk swept by, just over my head with a small bird in its clutches. It had made a kill without the hint of a sound. If only the sparrowhawk would start working its way through the flock of pigeons that have taken up residence in the garden… then we’d be getting somewhere.
