Elvis Costello and the Imposters starting their set at the Big Top in Fisheries Field last Friday night, as part of the Galway Arts Festival.
I’m a big fan of Elvis Costello so I couldn’t miss a gig of his that was happening only five minutes walk from my house. He was his usual excellent self, and there was an extra treat in the support act – The Undertones. The band are still strutting their stuff like rock gods and they rattled through their entire catalogue with glorious abandon (when every song is about 2 minutes long, it’s a bit easier than it sounds). Speaking of sound, they have to be the loudest band I heard in a long time (though there is an outside chance that I’m just getting old). It’s says something about Galway summer weather that Teenage Kicks wasn’t their most ironic song of the night (given the age of everyone there) – that was Here Comes Summer, as the rain streamed down off the tent.
