The Pirate Queen

The Pirate Queen

Sunrise over Clare Island off the Mayo coast last weekend. In the foreground, the ferry ship “The Pirate Queen” is moored just outside the harbour on the island.

It has been 4 years since I last visited the island, and like the last time, I went over as part of a group from the Galway Bay Walking Club. We were looked after very well indeed in the Granuaile House guesthouse – as soon as we arrived off the boat early on Saturday morning, we were invited into the sitting room for a coffee, which eased us into the day. Best of all is the view from the house – the house is practically part of the harbour. Naturally, I couldn’t let such a great view go to waste so I set up a camera on timelapse before heading off for dinner and the pub. I managed to get drenched at least twice that evening – the weather was great during the day while we were out walking, but it became quite stormy later in the evening. Luckily, the camera was well protected. Click here for the video – it is actually playing in reverse but I like it better that way so I haven’t fixed it.
