A vertical rainbow over Gentian Hill near Silver strand in Galway. A vertical rainbow is much like any other one – except that only part of the arc is visible. It is different from a “Sun Dog” – when looking at a rainbow, the sun is behind the observer, whereas with a sun dog/parhelion, the sun is in the middle of it. A “Moon Dog” [aka 22 degree halo ]works the same way as a parhelion except that the light source is the moon rather than the sun – this picture shows one over Salthill.
A beauty John.
