The Galway Walking Club spent the October Bank Holiday weekend hiking around the Nephin mountain range in Co. Mayo, and we had a couple of great days hiking. We got caught in a few hail showers on Saturday, but Sunday was a long sunny day and perfect for climbing Nephin mountain. We climbed it from the south in sunshine and in teeshirts – the mountain sheltering us from the northerly wind until we reached the top. The summit was covered in frozen hail, up to 20cm deep in places, giving the mountain a brilliant white crown that contrasted with the autumnal browns, oranges and drab greens of the surrounding countryside.
