There is a little, secluded place that I occasionally visit in east Galway. It is an area of mixed woodland, with plenty of deer, and has a small river flowing through it. It’s very picturesque , though I’ve never managed to take a really decent picture there. But even a 10 minute stop there refreshes the senses.

In the 3 or so years since I’ve discovered it, I’ve never met anyone else there, though there are plenty of farmhouses in the area. During last week’s heatwave, I decided to stop there. And for once, there was a crowd. A bunch of local lads were there, chilling in the stream. Damn it, I was tempted to jump in myself – it reminded my of my youth, when we would head over to Lilliput in Lough Ennell, to cool down and wash off the dirt after a hard day on the bog or bringing in hay.

In the end, I just got the lads to line up for a picture, and it kind of sums up the week here in Galway – the novelty of hot sunny days, and the hope that it might never end.

Lads, if you kept the card I gave you, you’ll find more higher resolution shots here to download.

  1. Hope these kids realize the memory service you performed for them. Years down the road….with this to look back on….wow…and to think they are such GOOD photos too…

  2. Looks like fun indeed. The secret place wouldn’t be referenced by ‘CB’ would it? Let’s keep it secret. Looks v. familiar – (my husband and myself are restoring a building nearby.)
