When the storms occurred this year in Galway, high tide occurred after dark, so there were not many people around to witness the water at its highest level. The picture above was taken during a combination of high tides and onshore winds back in 2007. Then, the high tide occurred in the evening, and many onlookers visited Salthill Promenade to view the waves crashing against the promenade. In the photo above, a cyclist narrowly misses the spray from a wave, though the dog gets a right drenching. A couple of minutes after this picture was taken, when the cyclist was passing by the promenade car park, an even bigger wave swept him off the bike and deposited him in a heap between two cars in the car park. He was ok (he was wearing a helmet) but he decided to walk the bike after that.
