And never the twain shall meet (I hope)

Temporary bridge in Leenane, Co. Galway

"Temporary" bridge in Leenane, Co. Galway

At one end of Killary Harbour is the imposing hulk of Mweelrea mountain and the serried lines of acquaculture – mainly mussels. At the other end is the picturesque village of Leenane and, with it, an open sewer pipe into the fjord. When the original bridge was washed away last year, it exposed the pipe (I remember taking some pictures at the time). The temporary bridge is still there (pictured above) and so is the outflow of sewage. Yes – I know the village is a few miles from the fish farming, and there’s lots of water in the fjord to dilute the yukky stuff.

But still. Seriously. We’re not supposed to be in the third world anymore. Or maybe not.
