Memorial stone for victims of Hugo De Groot aircrash on August 14th 1958.
Fifty years ago this week, a Dutch airliner bearing the name of Hugo De Groot crashed in the Atlantic Ocean 200 miles off Slyne Head. None of the 99 on board survived. Some of the dead were brought back to Galway city where they were buried in the ‘new’ cemetery in Bohermore – some were subsequently reinterred to Holland.
The tragedy was remembered this evening in a ceremony at the graveyard.
