My mother has set up the bird-feeder equivalent of the Eyre Square Supermacs in her back garden in Co. Westmeath – all sorts of creatures turn up to be fed and some of them can be quite rowdy. Redpolls are quite far down the pecking order so they spend much of their time waiting for the goldfinches to leave before nipping in to grab some food. The nearby clothes line makes a good perch for them.
