Brian Merriman farmed here, near the shore of Lough Graney in Co. Clare for much of his life. According to the entry on his life in the Irish Times Encyclopaedia of Ireland, he was a progressive farmer, who won prizes for his craft in 1796. That is not why he is remembered. His enduring legacy is a poem, The Midnight Court (Cúirt an Mean Oíche), which he wrote in 1780. He died on this date two hundred and ten years ago.
