Today is Lúnasa (or Lughnasa) , the first day of August and a time to celebrate the harvest. With all the good weather recently, I’ve been in a barbecue mood so I’ve been eating my way through as much of Connacht’s livestock as possible. The lovely specimen of Rack of Lamb in the picture above was probably trotting around Connemara until recently, but rest assured, I gave it a decent send-off. We are spoiled in Galway with a choice of great butchers and meat producers – the lamb above came from Tormey Butchers which is a treasure trove of meat. Carnivores should also try Herterich butchers shop near St Nicholas church, which sells only pork – their pork burgers are divine (they also have crubeens). And an honourable mention has to go to Collerans, whose black and white pudding are superb.
Hmm…feeling hungry again….
