On the way to Maméan

The Western Way leads along the base of the Maumturk mountain range,  first on bogland and then the small elevated road that overlooks the Inagh valley in Connemara. It then turns north through the Maumturks at a crossing point at Maméan, passing by the old holy shrine at Leaba Padraig and joining a boreen that ultimately connects to the R336 at the community centre in Maam. That path is also the last, tortuous leg of the Galway Walking Club’s annual marathon every August. Maméan is the lowest point between the mountains of Binn Chaónaigh (the closest mountain in the photo above)and Binn Mhór , and it is the Failmore river in the photo above that flows along the northern edge of the Maumturks until it reaches Lough Corrib, near Maum Bridge (i.e. Joe Keane’s bar).
