Very wet walkers wondering where the hell summer went – yesterday in Ballyconneely, Co. Galway.
Dear god almighty! One could expect a day’s walking to be a miserable affair in winter, but to spend a day drudging in wet clothes through constant driving rain and high winds in the middle of summer was a bit hard to take.
The Galway Walking Club held their summer barbeque yesterday – a ten mile walk around the headland at Ballyconneely followed by food in Keogh’s pub nearby. Alas, it was neither summer or a barbeque – the meal in Keogh’s was poor fare and the service disorganised – though we were just grateful to be out of the rain at that stage.
Ballyconneely is a lovely spot (south of Clifden – see google map below) but yesterday wasn’t the day to visit. To be fair to Met Eireann, the weather was exactly what was predicted. And, as luck would have it, today would have been a perfect day for the walk – bright and sunny, with just the odd passing shower to keep us from taking it all for granted.
