Emerald damselflies are truly beautiful, and glitter like jewels in the sunshine. Of course, there’s no guarantee of sunshine during an Irish summer, but on the first day of August, the sun blazed in the skies over Connacht. I spent the morning looking at damselflies. It was Ladies Day at the Galway Races too, and just like their human counterparts in the city, there was no shortage of beautifully attired females on show at the site I visited, and no shortage of male damselflies in hot pursuit.
This Emerald Damselfly might be in for a surprise – there is at least one spider about to emerge from the top of the plant.
The National Biodiversity Centre want people to record their sightings of damselflies (link here)
