Peacock butterfly

fauna-insects-26
A peacock butterfly [inachis io] feeding in wild meadow in Brigit’s Garden in Galway. You’d think that the peacock’s ‘eye’ wing decorations would stand out but in that late summer meadow, pink flowers such as knapweed and thistle meant that the butterfly blended in well with the background. The peacock feeds on nettles mainly – so no shortage of food in Ireland for them.
